Rethinking the “summer body” mentality: A more sustainable approach to wellness
A Conversation with Zoë Stern

As the warmer months approach, social media feeds are flooded with promises of the “perfect summer body.” The pressure to look a certain way can feel overwhelming — and exhausting. But what if wellness didn’t have to be tied to aesthetics?
Zoë Stern, a women’s nutrition coach, encourages a shift in mindset that prioritizes sustainable health and long-term well-being over short-term appearance goals.
Set performance-based goals
“Add a performance-based goal to your routine so you have something to work toward that isn't focused on what you look like. When our sole focus is aesthetic, it can be mentally taxing when we aren't seeing the look we want. When we have a goal centered around what our body can do, it helps support long-term motivation."
Celebrate small wins
“Small pieces of progress are the key to long-term results. Look out for all the little things that often go uncelebrated. Did you lift a little more weight at the gym? Did you begin cooking more meals at home? These things compound over time and will take you far further than rushing to get 'summer ready'.”
Monitor your thoughts
“Pay attention to your thoughts as these control more than most people realize. Our brain has one job, which is to keep us safe. When you catch yourself thinking something unhelpful, remember that this isn't necessarily reality but rather the pattern your brain has been trained to focus on. Think back to summers past, those thoughts of desperation have yet to lead you anywhere good, have they? We can shift these so you can finally break out of this yearly cycle.”
Focus on daily habits
“Focus on your daily habits and how they make you feel. These are the drivers of who you are and will take you much further than any quick 'summer ready' plan. Quick-fix approaches keep people feeling stuck because they don't address the foundation of how you live the majority of the time. That's the stuff that truly matters.”
Audit your social media
“Many people are preying on your insecurities and pushing programs that promise to 'get you fit,' but at what cost? You deserve to build more trust in yourself than chasing yet another program that will make you feel like a failure when you can't keep up with it because it's built on a quick fix.”
Wellness doesn’t need to be a race. By shifting the focus from appearance to performance, habits, and mindset, you can create a sustainable path to health that feels empowering rather than punishing. This summer, let your goals reflect what your body can do and how you feel — not just how you look.
